Paros is one of those islands that seem to have come right out of your dreams. This small island in the Aegean Sea just so happens to b EXCATLY like you imagine a Greek island to be. It is full of gorgeous beaches with really clear waters that are perfect for swimming and other water sports as well as traditional villages and towns with paved roads and full of those tiny white-washed houses and quaint churches that are associated with islands in this region. Paros is the kind of island that needs to be experienced to be believed, which is why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.
One thing that takes visitors to this island by surprise however is the fact that despite its small size, it has a lot of beautiful places and beaches to go around, which means that one needs a car in order to see everything that makes Paros so unique and beautiful. This is why most people coming to Paros also book cars along with their hotel rooms. Renting a car in Paros is relatively easy since there are a lot of car rental agencies to choose from – from local businesses to branches of big corporations – there are however some things that you should be on the lookout for when searching for the right car.
Read the fine print
They say that the devil is in the details and that couldn’t be more true as far as car rentals are concerned. Paros car rental agencies just love to hide charges and insurance loopholes in the fine print of the contract, so make sure that you know exactly what you are paying for and how much you are paying for it before going ahead and booking the car. Just a heads up, some companies will charge your credit card with a certain amount as insurance and will return the charge once you return the car in the condition you got it in, so always ask whether there will be any insurance charges before booking.
Ask for road assistance
Most local companies will offer road assistance for free while most big corporations will ask you to pay extra for it. Having road assistance for a rental might seem like one precaution too much, but it is one that you’re better off with than without. Having to wait for hours for help under the notoriously hot Greek summer fun because your car suffered an unpredictable failure or breakdown is something that you don’t want to experience. Most rental cars in Paros are regularly checked and serviced and are in excellent condition, but cars are complex machines and a lot can go wrong with them, so it’s better to be safa than sorry.
Make sure that your car has the right kind of gearbox
One thing that you should definitely keep in mind when renting a car in Paros and Greece in general is the fact that more than 90% of the cars on the road in Greece have manual gearboxes. As far as Greeks are concerned, all cars are manual unless indicated otherwise, which means that if you can’t drive a manual car and you don’t let the agency know that you need an automatic, they will just offer you a manual. If your vacation is during the high season, there’s a good chance that all automatic cars will have already be rented, so make sure to let them know ahead of time. Some agencies won’t ask you if you prefer an automatic or a manual because they assume that you know that most cars in Greece are manual, so be sure to mention your preference even if not asked for it.
